🚀 Rise of the Rocket Girls 🚀

  • My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Rise of the rocket girls” documents the lives of women who were “human calculators” at JPL (jet propulsion laboratory) but also busy mothers & wives at houses simultaneously. The author melts the stories and history of space exploration with anecdotes and struggles that the people featured in this book went through as women in the 1940-1970s. These intelligent, independent women form unbreakable bonds as coworkers as more women start to join the department.

What I specifically like about this book is that the author gives us the background information of the situations to make it more interesting (for example, the invention of something while someone was getting married) so that it feels more realistic because I was able to look into the actual realities and casualties that you don’t really hear often from scientific non fictions. 😚

The descriptions of candid lives behind the massive project of building missiles make it easier to understand and empathize with people in the book. Also, the contradictory feelings that women went through between staying at home to raise their children as a housewife (as a social norm) or continuing to work toward the revolutionary space project are well written in a relatable way.

Reading this made me question how big of a journey this author must have gone through to gather this much detailed information (reading it makes you feel as if you’re in that situation with those women!). The author makes a perfect balance of explaining the progress of space exploration and the daily lives of women. If you’re an astrophile or simply fond of strong, independent women in the past like me, then you should read this book!! 🙌👀
